Five things to ask yourself before becoming a beekeeper...

dakotahbee21

Beekeeping can be a very satisfying hobby, but it is hard work. One mans chore is another mans treasure. Ask yourself these questions prior to deciding to take on this involved but rewarding hobby.

Do you have the space for it?

Bees are relatively flexible when it comes to the location of their beehive, but they do require some things. There needs to be enough room for the beehive itself, the bees to roam, as well as space for the beekeeper to comfortably stand. This would be at least be a five foot radius, but the more room, the more comfortable.

Do you have the money for it?

Typically to purchase a beehive, it is $500 - $800. Then there is additional expenses that can include, medications, garden up keep, smokers, beekeeping gear, etc. Also, I would highly encourage you to have two colonies, that way you can compare and contrast, as well as learn from each one. As they say, the way to make a small fortune beekeeping is to start with a large fortune.

Do you have the time for it?

Although, of the pets and livestock group, bees are the most low maintenance, but they do still require come time. You should expect to spend at least a few hours every week or two, checking up on your bees and making sure everything is in order.

Have you done your research?

This is not some hobby where you buy all the equipment and decide to just let it sit around and catch dust while you figure out what you are actually doing. That’s for crafters, not beekeepers. Beekeeping involves living things. Granted there is a lot of learn-as-you-go components involved in this practice. But, it is important to know some of the basics to beekeeping, as well as the characteristics of bees prior to taking the jump.

Why do you want to have bees?

If you are wanting to have bees for the “aesthetic” you should not have bees. Keeping bees is an art as well as a practice. It is a beautiful relationship between bees and humans. Not a superficial trend to follow. You rely on the bees just as much as the bees rely on you, which is why beekeeping can be very rewarding when done correctly and with love.

Bees are beautiful creatures, and becoming a beekeeper is such a wonderful experience, albeit tasking. Be sure to evaluate yourself and your circumstances prior to inviting these friends into your life. Happy beekeeping :)
